How to talk to an adult

When you become a victim of crime, it can be difficult to deal with all the emotions resulting from it. In this case, you might feel significantly better if you at least talk to someone about how you feel. Sometimes we all need help, and people are willing to help each other, therefore it is important to not hesitate and not be afraid to ask for help.

The most important thing is to choose a person whom you trust when deciding whom it is best to talk to about what happened and about your feelings. You must feel safe and comfortable with that person. You will probably not want to talk with someone who knows the person that committed the crime.

You can talk to:

  • Your father or mother
  • Your brother or sister
  • Other close relative
  • Your friend
  • The father or mother of your friend
  • Teacher
  • Doctor
  • School nurse
  • Social worker
  • Psychologist
  • Employee or volunteer of a support service
  • Employee of a children’s day care centre

If you want your conversation to stay private, say so before you start the conversation. Also choose a convenient time, so that you can take your time to talk without rushing. Think beforehand about what you would like to say and what you want to ask – whether you only want to talk about what happened or you want to ask for specific help or advice.
